Most people do recognize that the war needed to be ended in this way to avoid the entire destruction of the Japanese race (whether in resistance or suicide). Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the kamikazes and other similar examples of the way Japanese soldiers and civilians were thinking prove that only something radical like the atomic bomb could avert even worse slaughter.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
