I'd heard it long before hitting the Wikipedia article on the subject, but I believe it's cited there, too (along with some other interesting facts on the military nature of the targets selected, one of which was the HQ for the entire Southern Defense of the main island, the warning leaflets encouraging surrender prior to the drop, and the hill that sheltered much of one town from the blast centered over a huge munitions plant. )
