Rand as the beggar Etzel Send a noteboard - 22/01/2010 04:57:48 PM
Soetnows' post below about Illusion and other weaves made me wonder: Why didn't Rand use an Illusion to mask his true appearance, when he visited Ebou Dar in the end of TGS?

One could say that he didn't care. On the other hand, Rand actively tries to hide his appearance to become "just another man":
"Last night, he had traded his fine black coat to a Tinker for a common brown cloak, ragged on the bottom and stitched in places. Not a Tinker cloak, just one that a Tinker had sewn up for a man who had never returned to claim it. It made him stand out less, even if it did require him to carry the access key looped to his belt, rather than his deep pocket. The Tinker also gave him a walking staff, which Rand used as he walked, slouching slightly. Height might make him memorable. He wanted to be invisible to these people." (TGS, ch.49)

Certainly an Illusion would be even easier and definitely hide his true appearance to make him invisible. Plus,Rand did the same in WH, ch.11, when he visits Elayne: "Anyone looking at him would see a man inches shorter and years older than Rand al'Thor, with lank black hair, dull brown eyes and a wart on his bulbous nose."

So, do you think that BS just forgot about this option? Or do you believe it might even have a certain plot relevance that Rand was seen by Seanchan soldiers in the end, namely that Tuon (or maybe the Tinkers, he spent time with) will eventually learn that the Dragon Reborn visited Ebou Dar and that this could lead to something?
