To give an impression of how stupid we are assumed to be, I should quote my physics textbook, in a section on the kinetic theory: "if we cram more gas molecules into the box" "If we squash the gas molecules".......this textbook.....you would only be using it if you were 17 or 18, and really, the word _compress_ is not beyond any of us....

Grammarians have been moaning about how bad it is to use split infinitives in English for the past couple of centuries, even though the alternatives are often completely unnatural. Without success, luckily.
