It was a silly fall, the kind that could have been easily avoided if only she were watching where her feet stepped. But over the curb she went, falling like a star from the heavenly air to the greasy pavement, falling in such slow motion as to make the world pause and wonder, falling with arms outstretched as though they might actually save her, falling and falling to break the sky, and even with all the time in eternity she could not close her eyes soon enough to avoid the impact.
The pavement rose up.
