The night was very clear, and the heavens sparkled as they had never done before, so close she could almost touch it. Jennica should have been asleep, but her window had been left open on this warm summer evening to cool the house down, so she had climbed out. She could see the silhouette of Mr. Johnson across the fence on his own roof, but he hadn't noticed her. Or if he did, he didn't say anything, which was for the best really.
Jennica wondered what was between the stars. Darkness? That's what it looked like, but Jennica had long ago learned that darkness usually hid things. The sky had a secret, and it didn't want her to know. The sky was hiding something.
She shivered. It probably didn't matter. How close can we get, anyway?
