in fact the number of Atlantic hurricanes has decreased over the last fifty years of the twentieth century. There were more storms, and of greater severity in the first fifty years. These facts are easily obtainable by any simple google search.

is that apparently all extreme weather must consist of hurricanes. It can easily be one of any number of factors here. Plus four in one year might be a statistical anomoly or might be indicative of something else. More importantly is the overall picture of what is happening around the world. To that extent I agree with you, but what the people might actually think about what occurs is also importnat and they might just put this into a particular pattern of worldwide events.

In fact the real problem both you and Mierin appear to be making is lookign at this one issue in isolation.
