Maybe it's something to do with the rhythms and stress on certain words or something...

And probably how you learned to "hear" the language in the first place. I'm most used to Colombian/Venezuelan rhythms, as that was what I was taught in HS. Then I was around a lot of Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Colombians when working in South Florida.

I do have a Mexican accent. I've been told that by non-Mexican spanish-speakers...I didn't think it was that difficult to learn.

I wouldn't be able to pick up a cuban accent or puerto rican...that seems more difficult to me. Maybe if I were in the country for a few years...

Or around them more? Amazing the differences in Spanish dialects compared to English, huh? More like between Nigerian, Jamaican, and Brit English for this Southerner
