Re: I just went and bought "I am Legend" and "I, Claudius" Linda Send a noteboard - 25/04/2010 10:57:32 AM
There's definitely some names repeating. I'm cautious with non-sf/f books because they tend to be depressing. But I went ahead and bought I am Legend and I, Claudius. (I've read Robert Graves' book of greek myths and loved his writing style, albeit in translation). The Gone-Away World is next in the buying pile.

I don't think you'll regret buying them. I am Legend is wonderful and frightening. I couldn't put it down because of the haunting atmosphere and the psychological study of Neville (the main character). A pure delight to read. Although I jumped a lot when reading whenever I heard sounds, especially the phone suddenly ringing (my brother phoned me a lot when I read the book, which scared the sh*t out of me every time).
I, Claudius is just hilarious. I love it! It's fun, crazy and downright frightening when I think that things like these actually have happened. Don't hesitate on Rubicon, although it's a non-fiction book it's as hilarious and lovely as I, Claudius. The Romans were a bunch of crazy people!:D It did not felt like a non-fiction book at all.
About Atonement, have you watched the movie? I watched the movie first and then read the book. Both are lovely. It's a sad story about the consequences of a lie.
Except for Never Let Me Go, I've read the rest of your sf/f list. Memory, Hyperion, Pandora's Star are all some of my favorite books too (although not top 10; they were great books but didn't hit an emotional spot for me).

Well, they're not all books that hit me emotionally (at least if you don't count the ones who were pure delights to read). Some touches me emotionally and others are pure delights to read.
Why did you like Never Let Me Go? I saw some other books by this author listed in this thread. I don't need the plot, but why the book spoke to you, how it made you feel.

The way the story was told touched me emotionally. The main character's (the story teller) restrained emotions, the acceptance and even disinterest in changing her situation is very haunting and scary. In the beginning of the story the main character's reminiscence of her childhood seems idyllic, but slowly a creepy feeling starts to seep through the pages and you get the feeling that there's something your not told, something important and horrible. Nothing is as it seems.
This thread gave me an idea of doing a "list swap" - to read a book from a person's list (of your choosing, but one that you haven't read yet) in exchange for them doing the same.
That sounds like a great idea!
Confused but on a higher level
