"Midnight Tides is without a doubt among Erikson's better work, but it isn't quite as dramatic, overwhelming and generally awe-inspiring as parts of Deadhouse Gates.."

Parts of Deadhouse Gates are fantastic, but huge parts of it are rather so and so, particularly the first 400 pages are pretty dull. Midnight Tides is much better throughout the book, things I general feel much more relevant to the overall plot of the book, than Fiddler, Kalam and Icarium walking in the desert without much happening for large parts of the first half.
