And since I'm evidently a stubborn person about this kind of thing, I have the bad habit of going "bollocks" when such an annoying twist is revealed, and maintaining that this is too stupid to be true and it'll be overruled at some point. I had my hopes set on Elisabeth for that part, as she seemed to recognize the protagonist and seemed the only one unaffected by the whole thing. I gave up on hoping that the travesty would be set aright about, hm, ten pages before the end, I think.

Part of it might be that I didn't realize until reading one of Camilla's posts here (I finished the book literally less than a minute before diving into the Book Club - is that dedication or what? ) that the protagonists' memories of things done without Gonzo were not in fact made up, but Gonzo's memories. Needless to say, since I didn't really get it even after I'd finished the book, I hadn't seen it coming either. I guess I'm not very good with unreliable narrators - it was obvious that the protagonist was an unreliable narrator of some sort, sure, one doesn't have a nameless protagonist for no reason, but evidently my mind is so straightforward that if it gets told there are two characters, it takes a lot to dispel that notion and realize there's only one. Gonzo was a caricature, sure, but then most characters were, and our protagonist was not - that might've given it away easier, perhaps.
