I'm really not sure what to make of it. It feels like I'm missing the point. Assuming that there is one in the first place. 
Gogol seems to want to mock Kovalyov's kind of snobs, as well as people's credulity and fascination with such stories, but that's about all I can make of it. No idea about Ivan Yakovlevich.
It's not a bad story, to be sure - Gogol does good, short descriptions, and it's certainly original and unpredictable. But I imagine I'd appreciate it more if I understood it more.
