Am I missing something about the Dresden Files? Tom Send a noteboard - 22/06/2010 04:05:52 PM
Granted, I'm only about 1/3 of the way into the first book, but everything I've read seems very...silly. I've seen cardboard cutout police figures that neatly fit into a few handy police stereotypes, and mobsters that act like Fat Tony from the Simpsons more than something textured and "realistic" like Tony Soprano. Also, a man is renting an office in downtown Chicago and somehow $500 will cover more than one month's rent, according to him. That would make sense if this were, say, 1950.

What is it that everyone likes about these books? I've so far seen a lot of stock writing and bad cliches. The magic element is sort of fun, but come on. If I just wanted to read formulaic detective books I could go to the source and read Mickey Spillane books.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius

Ummaka qinnassa nīk!

To be honest, the first two books are a bit formulaic - 22/06/2010 04:27:01 PM 389 Views
First three, for me - 22/06/2010 04:59:49 PM 370 Views
I stopped at the end of 3 (or 4), so maybe I'll start again *NM* - 25/06/2010 12:00:46 PM 131 Views
The first book really isn't a good example of the series. - 22/06/2010 04:27:45 PM 371 Views
This is a good reply. *NM* - 22/06/2010 05:10:21 PM 130 Views
I think the only way I would continue is if those "hints" are promising enough for me. - 22/06/2010 05:19:06 PM 379 Views
Which is the way that it should be. - 22/06/2010 07:22:42 PM 322 Views
Not really - 22/06/2010 05:52:22 PM 371 Views
I may abandon the read altogether and just read something else. - 22/06/2010 06:24:36 PM 394 Views
Do you like Fitzgerald's writing? - 22/06/2010 10:14:25 PM 346 Views
