only show up in the Appendices. Gildor, for instance, and Cirdan, do not actually take up much space in the main text/s. Helm Hammerhand isn't there at all, just mentioned because of a geographical-historical-strategic coincidence. He's not an important character in the text's present. He's very important backstory, and history.
Who is Gildor, anyway? The name certainly sounds familiar, but other than him being an Elf, I'm at a loss as to who he is or what he does.
I'll tell you the one I find shocking? Goldberry. Really? She wasn't mentioned all that much... was she?
I think barely or not at all outside that one chapter in which the Hobbits are staying with her and Tom Bombadil - but then, during that chapter, she gets mentioned a lot, evidently.
who shows up once or twice through the first volume. He and his band of other elves are returning to Rivendell, and they provide Frodo and co. company, shelter for a night. He sort of warns him about the Nazgul, and I think names Frodo Elf-friend. And I think his singing, or his band's singing, frightens the Nine.
