I think it is still Eco's most polished work, despite being his first. And it is a lovely read. I read it the first time when I was 11 or so (and loved it), and did not understand most of the references, and I've reread it on random intervals since then. It is lovely how the book grows more complex and interesting as I acquire more knowledge. Most definitely a work that works on several levels.
