He's not trained or perfect, but I think Crawford just sounds really blah (technical term).
Crawford's evil laugh alone makes it worth it. But no doubt it's largely a matter of my being so used to him that hearing someone else grates a bit. Still, I think Crawford sings better, puts more feeling into it, and is generally superior. But opinions differ, of course.
He is a better singer. But he's too smooth for the character, IMO. I like how rough and rocky Butler's voice is. Suits a barbaric character (which the Phantom is, despite his attempts to be a gentleman). To be fair, though, I suppose it is important that the film Phantom is very sexed up.
Also: Butler is hot and Crawford decidedly is not.
