I borrowed this from my ex-girlfriend because I remembered her liking it. I was previously unfamiliar with the author, Graham Greene (in fact I only knew of him because of a John Cale song by the same name), but was keen to try something completely different. And man, that's exactly what I got. But the experience was pleasant indeed -- actually I'm now determined to seek out other books of his and am open to suggestions. I was truly delighted by this book. The humor is often subtle but poignant, actually I frequently laughed out loud reading this, which I can't remember happening since Cannery Row. And I can't remember reading something with quite the level of characterization present here... the dialogue is effortless and above all, the whole tale is somehow mundane and imaginative at the same time. Very entertaining. I am enthralled.
Anyway this wasn't meant as a proper review or anything. Maybe one of you can tell me more about his work, or disagree with my assessment completely. Thanks.

Seconded. I'd also highly recommend his Complete Short Stories for a good overview. *NM*
