How does The Children's Book compare to her other works?
Possession is one of my favourite books of all time (of any genre), but I've read several other things she's written and have been disappointed, either luke-warm or sometimes unable to finish. She seems to have quite a variety of styles (though they seem similar on the surface).
I have only read Possession and The Children's Book, so I cannot compare to the rest. I'd say it is definitely on par with Possession, although in a very different style. It is much more organic, colourful. It does not experiment with different styles in the way Possession did, but it does some very nifty things with history. I recommend it. It seems to be the consensus among those who have read much Byatt that those two are her best books.
