News / Petunia / Snape / Tonks - Edit 1

Dursleys: I like how they are used to make the point that normal teenagers don't listen to the news.

A point that is ironically confirmed by Harry's failure to read the Prophet once he's established they won't put Voldemort's return on the front page. He's still not very politically aware. Good thing he has Hermione.

Hehe. You're right. I hadn't thought of that.

I found the overlap between Muggle news and the Prophet interesting at this stage, with Harry even seeing pictures of Sirius on the TV news. Sets the tone for the bleed over after the Ministry accepts that Voldemort's back and for the interactions with the Prime Minister in HBP. Did find it strange that he would go to such lengths to watch the TV news, but not read the Prophet, as you've mentioned.

Petunia: I just realised. Petunia says her information about dementors and Azkaban comes from "that awful boy telling her about them years ago". But that would have been Snape, the awful boy, wouldn't it. Not Potter?

Ooh, nice catch. Another case of Snape's memories changing our interpretations of earlier scenes... I like it.

Thank you. I am very happy with it. I love those sudden realisations.

Petunia herself is at her most interesting in this book, in this scene with all the letters. A history is hinted at, and it makes her more than a caricature. Her connection to the magical world hidden under the veneer of normalcy. I like it.

Definitely.

The Snape / Petunia history was a major revelation for me. Also, goes to show a theme on what kids do to each other and the impact it has on them as adults. Just look at how messed up Petunia is after her interactions with Snape, "losing" her sister to the magical school, then losing her sister for real after all that built up animosity. Not an excuse for what she does to Harry, but it closely mirror's Snape's treatment of Harry, both due to love and loss around Lily.

Tonks: I could manage without her. Everyone knows Lupin and Sirius belong together. Tonks just gets in the way.

This is crazy talk. Tonks is awesome. And gets too little screen time.

Piffle.

Tonks at this stage was fun. Love the scene with her changing around and teasing the kids. I wish we got to see more of her too, before she got all love sick for Lupin. That dynamic did seem unnecessary to me, but (and you should know, with your professions of love for Lupin) how could she resist?? :P
