Pullman was just saying that it' starting to come off more like a gimmick than anything else.
People are reading too much into this, I think. It's not a political manifesto, it's just a guy bitching about something he's unhappy with. No different than a football fan bitching about too many running plays, or a music fan wishing his band would finally learn another freaking chord.
