I don't recall adoring Mathilda or The BFG, although looking back on The BFG I'm remembering some things I really did like.
I do adore Matilda. That and The Witches are my favourites, I think, more so than the BFG.
He wrote some stuff for adults, though, and I don't think I read much of those. I vaguely recall an autobiographical thing he wrote, and it was very interesting. Very British. He was probably my first introduction into British culture, come to think of it.
Yeah, I remember we read passages from the boarding school part of his autobiography in high school. Wasn't my first introduction into British culture, but it was quite interesting and a bit of a culture shock all the same.

No, the experiences I remember were largely positive.

Oh, I meant mostly his children's books, haven't read all of his adult stuff either.

Robert Anton Wilson, Jung, and I'm getting to be gushy over Steinbeck.

Wodehouse, Orwell, and Douglas Adams. I'll never tire of reading and rereading their books. *NM*

R.A. Salvatore. I know it's absurd but his Drizzt novels get me misty, esp when his dwarves grieve.
