Right. A better answer, now that I've got the book and have refreshed my memory. Rebekah Send a noteboard - 26/10/2010 03:53:58 PM
The characters being a bit "meh" for me. Didn't love them, didn't hate them. Found them more childish and irritating, even after they'd grown up.

That's not surprising, considering that they're life isn't ever going to be a normal life. They're not there to be people. They're there to be replacements. I think they were taught just enough to keep them out of trouble and keep them healthy and that's it. They don't have the right emotional development as they're sheltered from mixing with a broad range of people. So Ishiguro wrote their characters well, I think.

I really dislike the use of not-so-subtle foreshadowing or linking sentences like "and that was the last time i spoke to Ruth until after the incident..... it was 6 years later when the incident happened". I guess after years of reading RJ who is a bit more subtle than that it's somewhat jarring.

It wasn't used as foreshadowing. The book is more like a memoir than a normal novel. It's all a collection of Kathy's thoughts. That's pretty much exactly how people do things when reminiscing. I've got a book my Dutch Grandmother wrote and published about her experiences in World War II and it follows exactly the same meandering pathway that this book does. Once again it makes me incredibly aware of Ishiguro's talent as an author. Every book is different.
