Lovecraft may not fare much better than a bad Poe. And true, he is nearly always too verbose, but that's kind of the beauty of it at times, to sink into those longest passages of slightly archaic prose with their almost academic feeling. At his best I think he was almost visionary. Rendering the Beyond as something indefinite and terrifying is no mean feat, but he was often excellent at it.
