Thanks for the great suggestions, everybody!

Think I'll suggest either Gaiman or Hobb after a little research into the two of them.
I've read Mists of Avalon, and was put off by the 'incompetent men/men-only-want-one-thing/men are for manipulating' overtones.
On second thought, maybe I'll start there! :P
