The Belgariad and The Elenium are both decent popcorn reads Mark Send a noteboard - 18/03/2011 11:40:24 AM
Have you read anything by Eddings?

I've read the Belgarid & Malloreon (plus related standalones), The Elenium & The Tamuli, Althaus and the first book of the Dreamers (which series I then abandoned due to being too much of the same). Reading the Rivian Codex can be interesting. He pretty much explains the formula he used for writing all his stories (pretty much the same formula most epic fantasy uses) He also explains why he went into writing fantasy (he found a 28th edition of Lord of the Rings).

If yes, how long ago did you (first) read it/them?

The first thing of his I read was the Elenium which must have been 16-17 years ago.

- Do you reread?

I've reread The Elanium and The Belgarid, both of which I consider good popcorn reads.

- What's your favourite of his series?

It's pretty much even between the Elenium and the Belgariad. If you forced me to choose, I'd go for The Belgariad by a whisker.

- Favourite character?

Probably Belgarath for nostalgia's sake, he was the first wise old wizard character I had encountered who was a little less than reputable. I also liked Ce'Nedra and Anheg, who both have their moments.

- Are the Elenium and Tamuli set in a version of Earth? Or is it a version of the world of the Belgariad and Mallorean?

I would say it is closer to earth then the Belgariad world, but that could just be to do with the religious aspects.

If no, why not? :P

I've just reread The Elenium (bought the trilogy from my charity bookshop a few weeks ago) and I loved it. It's certainly my favourite of his series. I am torn about whether I want to reread The Tamuli, though. I want character closure, but it's not very good.

I'd advise just leaving it. While it has it's moments the Tamuli ultimately just feels like a poor copy of the Elenium. It's not like the characters particular grow or develop. If you feel like more Eddings I'd say go back and read the Belgariad.

No. Never cared to read it, since I rarely read epic fantasies until 13-14 years ago. *NM* - 16/03/2011 09:33:52 PM 648 Views
