I rather liked him. What was wrong with him?
His obsession with that black guy whose name I can't remember, fawning over him, generally ignoring or sabotaging everyone else - it wasn't really much fun to read about, and some parts of the book seem to deal with little else for long stretches at a time.
My favourite quote comes from one of those parts:
When he awoke it was dawn. Or something like dawn. The light was watery, dim, and incomparably sad. Vast, grey, gloomy hills rose up all around them and in between the hills there was a wide expanse of black bog. Stephen had never seen a landscape so calculated to reduce the onlooker to utter despair in an instant.
"This is one of your kingdoms, I suppose, sir?" he said.
"My kingdoms?" exclaimed the gentleman in surprize. "Oh, no! This is Scotland!"
But I see what you mean. I think part of the reason I remember it so fondly is that I have forgotten anything that annoyed me.
