I am not a great fan of reading translations into other languages than English (or, at a pinch, Norwegian). I figure that if I am going to make the effort of reading in another language, I might as well read it in Italian. Which is an option. Or would be if I weren't swamped. Perhaps the late release date is a blessing in disguise. At least it will not sidetrack me over the summer.
... after my rather disastrous attempt to read The Master and Margarita in Spanish, having bought it in Spain with the "if I can't read it in Russian, what does it matter which language I read it in" mindset. I'm sure that book is as good as everyone says it is, but I really wasn't feeling it as I wrestled my way towards the halfway point of the Spanish version and then gave up (which is certainly to blame on my imperfect knowledge of Spanish as much as on the translator, or more so).
That said, trying to read Eco in the original Italian seems like suicide to me.
I did a comparative exercise once, where I compared Eco in Italian to Eco in English translation. I found the Italian more easy going than I had expected. That said, those were all books I had already read. I am not sure how well I would do with an all new one.
