Well, I am wondering whether the Murray reference is a conscious one to the John Murray travel books.
He establishes no tie between Gillian Murray and the travel books - definitely not the same Murrays - but chances are he referenced the name on purpose, based on a few other little literary nods like this. It's a pretty big coincidence otherwise.
I think you're likely to pick up many things like this. The most obvious references I caught (and I'm sure I missed many more obvious ones) were various nods to Dracula in the Claire story.
