She's the good-as-gold black servant charged with raising white children, just like Mammy in Gone With the Wind. I'm not saying that Lee should have made her different; I'm just saying that Calpurnia isn't where I would expect to see a more nuanced or complex approach to racism.

Maybe I'm just misremembering that, but I seem to recall her as being one of the few people who approach Atticus' level of education and intellect.


I did not notice that. She had a lot of his sense of the world, i.e. telling Scout off for not treating her guests right. But not as far as schooling.
