but it also sounds like it depends rather a lot on the writing. How is the plotting?

It goes for a bit of a mosaic effect at times, and the only part of the plot that keeps going throughout the novel - Eïlai's life - isn't exactly built in a traditional build-up-to-dénouement way. It can get frustrating when interesting plotlines are traded in for less interesting ones, and at one point near the end I got rather annoyed when she started a whole new plotline that seemed rather dull and anti-climactic at first (though it quickly got better).

Still, it has to count for something that she can make all those bits and pieces of plot interesting.
