It would TOTALLY fit her character. Maybe have the dad have custody, so Murphy can't see the daughter as much as she likes. Maybe Murphy lost custody because the father showed that Murphy's devotion to being a cop wasn't good for the child's well being, or something equally emotionally heartrending.
