Charlton Heston starred in an eariler adaptation of the book. I have never read the book, but from the comments I have seen about the book, that movie version is much truer to the book. That movie is called The Omega Man (1971 is the year, so the Planet of the Apes Heston made this, not the Ben Hur Heston)
