I don't know if I can even talk about the first book alone. I remember finding it weird at first with the our-world/their-world thing, modern day humans going into a fantasy world, that whole thing. I didn't really like it. But then slowly it got better, and by the end with the tree (and was there a part with the black swan?) started to really pick up and pull me in with some powerful storytelling. It only gets better from there. Much, much better.
Yes, the black swan was in the mid/end of the first book. And now I am in trouble, because I'm not supposed to be spending money on books.' />
...I can throw my recommendation in with Nate's. You won't regret it
If you are from Betelgeuse, please have one of your Earth friends read what I've written before you respond. Or try concentrating harder.

Fionavar is very traditional fantasy, alright, but better than most everything in that genre.
