I don't think writing in books is up there with burning them and I wouldn't shun someone who writes in books but I just don't do it. To me it just seems like it's defacing an already perfect work of art.
Why? I should stress I would not write in an illuminated manuscript of a 19th century first edition (I am weary of writing in first editions in general), but how is a generic book a perfect work of art? The text? That can be found elsewhere as well. Do you cringe at note-taking in e-books? I am aware of a difference, and I find it interesting.
