The female name could have just been a "beard", so to speak. Also, I seem to remember in Candide something about some homosexual tendencies of Frederick, so I was already colored by that.

Wouldn't using a female name to cloak a homosexual poem be, you know, the opposite of a beard? :P

But yes, the reason why I thought it might be homosexual at the beginning was that I vaguely remembered about how Friedrich's father found his son a sissy and there were hints of homosexuality in his youth, not to mention the infatuation with Voltaire... I guess there was no way he would've written such a poem even if he was gay, though, not even in secret.
