People actually claimed that Sword of Shannara was good? Huh. *NM* lord-of-shadow Send a noteboard - 28/09/2011 03:14:25 PM
I don't usually pick up a book expecting horrible writing unless it's something I know is bad (eg. Twilight), but I've been pleasantly surprised by a few books I picked up because they sounded OK and I like their age and nice binding (yes, I'm one of those people). Rickshaw Boy and Temptation of St. Anthony were both books that fall into those categories.

However, I've had the opposite happen a LOT. I pick up a book that I hear people RAVE about, and am just plain disappointed. I started Sword of Shannara and, I'm sorry, hated it. Maybe it's because I've read so many OTHER books that start with the same ol' farm boy trope, and it sucks because SoS came before most of them, but it still just immediately turned me off and I had a lot of problems moving past it.
