Though I've not revisited it extensively since reading it as a teenager. .

I like your review. One thing I might add, from what I remember of Walter Kaufmann's introduction to my edition, is that Nietzsche was in terrible condition during the writing of this book, and apparently nearly gone mad by the time he concluded it. There is a great description, if I could be bothered to dig it out, from someone who visited him during this time and was appalled by his sickness and his will to keep writing. As with anything of a creative nature, the conditions must've had a profound effect on the product, which seems so staunch in its individualism.

You are right, there are many wonderful aphorisms to remember even in the English, though the countless puns and jokes are surely difficult to translate. I still remember "He who is not a bird should not build his nest over abysses," and one which I often quote concerning people who seem too nice, "Verily I have often laughed at those who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

Also, I recall that I really liked a section about marriage and intended someday to contribute the material to my own vows, should I ever take any.
