I agree about the consistency. And possibly about the storytelling. Legolas Send a noteboard - 29/11/2011 06:25:52 PM
I categorize her as somewhat average when compared to other fantasy authors. Credit to her for some original ideas and a slightly different twist to her world and development. However, she does little to distinguish her stories or her characters as anything particularly engaging.

In my opinion, she's to be rated above most other fantasy writers, but largely because of the character of Phèdre, who is and remains one of my all-time favourite fantasy characters - which is why I was far less impressed by her second trilogy, even though it really is hard to point at other meaningful differences between the two in terms of quality, as you note. The other characters in the books are not really beyond average, but inventing Phèdre was a stroke of genius that, combined with the other good ideas she had, made for a great trilogy. The second trilogy lacked any such stroke of genius, and the reader had grown accustomed to the most notable ideas, so it was rather less impressive.
Basically, what you see is pretty much what you get. If at the end of the book you don't find yourself much of a fan, that opinion probably won't change much in subsequent books. If you do like what you're reading, then Carey probably won't disappoint you in her other books. She is very consistent in what she writes.

Definitely true, if someone isn't satisfied by the end of Dart, there's no point in reading on.
