A lot of people felt that it seemed substantively different from Hesse's earlier works, and it has been criticized by some. I am certainly planning on reading it, and soon, but if you want to read something by Hesse you haven't, I'd suggest one of the other ones as perhaps a better opportunity to start off with a strong book that you don't struggle through.
