No, I just think that people forget they're reading a translation Tom Send a noteboard - 12/01/2012 09:29:41 PM
I've noticed that the vast majority of Biblical literalists are reading the Bible only in its English translation. Reading Genesis in Hebrew gives the book a COMPLETELY different tone than it has in English, and the very attempt to claim that the stories of Genesis are historical fact exactly as they are recorded is even more laughable when you read the book in Hebrew. The puns, the alliterations, the matching verse couplets...it's just a completely different thing altogether.

I also find that Biblical literalists don't understand that spiritual texts can have spiritual value regardless of historicity. One of the most famous stories of the Bible, the Good Samaritan, is a parable (παραβολη). It never happened. Its instructive value is immense, however.

Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

ἡ δὲ κἀκ τριῶν τρυπημάτων ἐργαζομένη ἐνεκάλει τῇ φύσει, δυσφορουμένη, ὅτι δὴ μὴ καὶ τοὺς τιτθοὺς αὐτῇ εὐρύτερον ἢ νῦν εἰσι τρυπώη, ὅπως καὶ ἄλλην ἐνταῦθα μίξιν ἐπιτεχνᾶσθαι δυνατὴ εἴη. – Procopius
