Just to be confusing, THIS RIVER was not his first written novel, which was in fact GARDENS.

Steven Erikson - This River Awakens - 19 Jan UK & US
This appears to be a re-publishing of Erikson's very first published novel, originally published in 1998 under his real name. I guess they rightly figure it'll get a lot more attention now...
GARDENS OF THE MOON is actually Erikson's first novel, written in 1991. THIS RIVER AWAKENS was written a few years later, but published first.
Of course, just to be totally brain-frying, Esslemont's first two books (NIGHT OF KNIVES and RETURN OF THE CRIMSON GUARD) were actually written in the 1980s, before GARDENS was even written and a decade or more before it was published
