So, it is Burns Night.

I assume you are stockpiling haggis, neeps (word of the day at OED today) and tatties. And whisky. And Burns' poetry.

I am quite fond of his shorter stuff:

I'm now arrived -- thanks to the gods! --

Thro' pathways rough and muddy,

A certain sign that makin' roads

Is not this people's study:

Altho' I'm not wi' Scripture cram'd

I'm sure the Bible says

That heedless sinners shall be damn'd

Unless they mend their ways.

or

Fair maid, you need not take the hint,

Nor idle texts pursue:

'Twas guilty sinners that he meant,

Not Angels such as you.

or

Thou graybeard, old Wisdom! may boast of thy treasures;

Give me with old Folly to live;

I grant thee thy calm-blooded, time-settled pleasures,

But Folly has raptures to give

or

The poor man weeps -- here Gavin sleeps,

Whom canting wretches blam'd;

But with such as he, where'er he be,

May I be sav'd or d--d!

But Burns wrote a lot of good poems. In the link below (marked "link") you can find some of them read by people like the Prince of Wales, Alan Cumming, Bill Paterson, Denis Lawson, Gary Lewis, John Sessions and Phyllida Law.

Go. Enjoy.
