Have you read Raymond E Feist? I'm assuming yes, since he's one of the big 80s names. I basically only like the Riftwar Saga of his stuff, BUT.

Read the series he wrote with Janny Wurts, if you haven't already. It's excellent. I reread them last year and hadn't remembered how good they were. It's the Empire trilogy: Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire, Mistress of the Empire.

Also: Janny Wurts' huge project The Wars of Light and Shadow. There are currently 9 books, and I think there are 2 more planned. The first is The Curse of the Mistwraith. People can find them a little difficult to get into because Wurts has chosen an almost archaic style of writing for them, but once you get used to that they're easy reads. (I love the style, so never had any trouble, but my brother found it a little offputting at first.) I think she's very underrated as an author and like to recommend her books whenever people ask for more fantasy suggestions.


Thanks! I don't particularly like Feist (his structure and prose and characterization have always rubbed me the wrong way), but I will definitely check out Curse of the Mistwraith!
