All I really remember from grade school is an "Elements of Literature" textbook, that had excerpts from all sorts of books and texts in it. And I, at least, find it very hard to become engaged or deeply interested in just a little excerpt of something, even if from a worthwhile source.
Highly misleading Telegraph article claims US schools will drop fiction reading.
