View original postIn case you've forgotten, I previously mentioned that I am in a book club and that I am going to occasionally post our thoughts here after we've had some (if I think you all might like the book).
I dare say plenty of people here would like it, yeah.
View original postWe all know this won't be a standard review, but I will tell you our overall reactions. The nature of the book pretty much means that I have to spoil things in order to talk about them, but I'll try to avoid that as much as possible. This will probably confuse all of us, so just ask me if you don't get something.
I'm not sure there is much to spoil in this book, honestly. It doesn't take the reader long to understand what is going on and it's not as if that's a big secret or elaborate mystery. And then as for the only other major plot element that could be "spoiled", eh, revealing it probably adds more to the book's appeal than keeping it a secret. Or at least that's my view, but then as mentioned before I found that last segment probably more impressive than everything before it.
View original postThe POV is from the child. He is five years old, and just mature enough to have begun to occasionally sense that their situation isn't quite normal. He doesn't understand why though, and in some cases this works very well to sneak some major realizations on the reader. Since he's five (and his development can in no way be called "normal" ), he doesn't think the way we're used to from a narrator. Consequently, it can take a minute to decipher the things he is seeing, and there are a couple skin-crawling "...ohhh..." moments, because of context clues embedded in his thoughts/questions.
Did you (and/or your reading group friends) think his development was realistic? Larry's review expressed serious doubts about that, as did mine - even for a highly intelligent kid in a unique situation, it seemed questionable.
The other question, of course, is whether the mother's heroics are realistic... during, but no less after. On the whole I'm inclined to say yes, which makes her pretty damn awesome.
View original post... I keep trying to continue, but I'm stuck. I think I will put the rest in a reply, because I cannot figure out how to keep from spoiling the story. Be warned! The reply will not hold back.
No, it's hard to say much without spoiling, for sure. Although it is kind of fun, being all vague and mysterious and trying to phrase things so as to make sense to other readers without spoiling.

Soo, I completely forgot to blather on about Room.
