People tend to love him or hate him. I personally really enjoy his style, and if you treat the books as something less than "horror" per se but just "weird fiction" (which you mentioned), then the expectations are somewhat different. There is a bit of predictability in some of his works, but I don't have a problem with that. I think that much of the credit he gets is probably due to his influence on other writers, as well as on movies, music and other arts.

While I was critical, I do admit I like some of the stuff I've gone through with him. Even though I don't think I will continue reading too much more of him, but I am glad that I did. I think what does impress me about his writing is that after being exposed to his works I can clearly see the influence he had on writers and filmmakers to come. That alone was worth the time spent on his works.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
