Never in my life...comma splices...gah! Nighthawk Send a noteboard - 29/07/2014 10:29:28 PM

So I read this very popular, self-published fantasy novel called Blood Song by Anthony Ryan. The man is infatuated with commas. There is a comma splice on just about every page. I had to grit my teeth just to get through it. Instead of separating two independent sentences with a period or a semi-colon, he would simply use a comma. I didn't spot one semi-colon in the entire book. He didn't even bother just adding subordinating or coordinating conjunctions! It was shocking. I have never seen so many comma splices...but this is a self published work. There is some understanding there.

So he releases a sequel. His first book had received enough attention that he is now published. This sequel, Tower Lord, is professionally published. AND IT STILL HAS NOTHING BUT COMMA SPLICES!!! Someone, anyone, please tell me how this is possible? He wrote a ton of comma slices, they are everywhere. See? That's the kind of shit on every page! It reads like bad fan fiction! I...I don't even know what to say. How is this possible? I think he's English, if that means anything.

I'm quite guilty of overusing them when I write. - 31/07/2014 01:46:10 PM 678 Views

I know neither the book nor the author, so I don't know how bad it is. - 01/08/2014 06:07:27 PM 625 Views
It's not a POV thing. That's how he writes. *NM* - 01/08/2014 06:26:50 PM 256 Views
