I'm not sure I agree with your prognosis of epic fantasy.

Malazan Book of the Fallen was very well received, and although aSoIaF is hilariously delayed, it's arguably the most popular epic fantasy since Tolkien.
And there are plenty of multi-novel fantasy series like Harry Potter, which isn't "epic" but has wide appeal, to put it mildly.
