You had kids books and not kids books and nothing of this sort of kids book thing. A lot of the Scfi I read back then I guess could be called YA. Stuff like Have Space Suite Will Travel was written for kids not young adults. I guess Dragon Riders of Pern could be called YA but it didn't really have the whole young angst ridden romance theme of so much YA.
