Since I also have no inclination to read them, I did just read the Wikipedia summaries, which confused me more than anything else. Presumably the plot makes more sense when not retold in brief summaries.

It sounds like the later books don't necessarily go much darker than the first one, but, you know, it's still a dystopian series, so it's just par for the course that most characters die sooner or later. You have to wonder what the obsession with dystopias in YA fantasy is all about...
